The Elevator Pitch

"What is your research about?"

This is a question we hear all the time when we are doing a Ph.D., be it from friends and family, acquaintances or scholars at a conference or research meeting. Therefore, it is fundamental that we have something ready for when people ask us that dreaded question.

An elevator pitch (or research spiel) is a short (around 2 minutes) statement of your research interests and experience to be shared informally and orally. We begin every Digital Media meetup with this question to introduce ourselves and to practice this technique.

Here are some tips on how to create an elevator pitch:

  • Imagine that you are explaining your research to a close friend or fellow student from another field.

  • Know what you want your audience to take away from your presentation.

  • Try to leave the audience with an understanding of what you’re doing, why it is important, and what you hope to achieve.

  • If you are talking to new people, begin by briefly introducing yourself.

  • Avoid jargon and academic language.

  • Highlight the outcomes of your research and the desired outcome.

Your pitch will most-likely change regularly, so be sure to review it and practice often.
